Entertaiment is any activity designed to keep people amused or diverted. It can be as simple as watching TV or reading a book, or as complex as participating in a play or sporting event. In modern times, entertainment has become an industry that provides many with livelihoods.

The word entertainment is derived from the Medieval Latin intertenere, meaning “to hold inside.” It can also be traced back to the Indo-European root ten, which means to stretch or expand.

Entertaining activities often evolve over time, transforming from something that is necessary or important to someone into an enjoyable activity for a larger audience. This has happened with such activities as fencing or archery, which started out as necessary skills for some and have developed into professional sports and global competitions.
